Fake Cop Roamed Pennsylvania Streets, Intimidating Residents: Police

A man pretending to be a police officer allegedly harassed residents and even tried taking law enforcement action in Quarryville, authorities announced.

John Francis McCarthy is accused of impersonating a public servant and using the fake identity to intimidate multiple people, Quarryville Borough Police said on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

On Saturday, Feb. 15, McCarthy allegedly approached two real officers and made statements that led them to believe he was taking official law enforcement action, despite not being a sworn officer, police said.

Investigators later discovered McCarthy had allegedly posed as an officer on multiple occasions, intimidating and harassing residents. Police also linked him to similar incidents in other jurisdictions.

Authorities fear more victims may be out there. Anyone who has had a similar encounter with McCarthy is urged to contact Officer Keene at keenej@quarryvillepd.org.
